Jackson councilman wants Ms flag changed

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Jackson city councilman says the capital city and the governor should be taking a leadership role in calling for changing Mississippi's flag.

Ward 3 Councilman Kenneth Stokes said such a resolution is already on the agenda for Tuesday's council meeting.

Stokes said the Confederate symbol within the flag does not represent most black Mississippians and it's not a good reflection on the Magnolia State.

"The whole United States of America , and the world, is looking at the state of Mississippi. In Jackson City Hall, we do not fly the confederate flag. Magnolia, Mississippi, took down the confederate flag. And we ask that other cities throughout the state of Mississippi and counties to take down the confederate flag."

Stokes claims Mississippi's 2001 referendum on whether the flag should be changed was a symbolic vote. He said only the Legislature can make that change.
