JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

You see them everywhere, maybe even in the mirror. We are talking about people with fat protruding beneath their chins. It's a common problem. Now, there is an option to correct it, without going under the knife.

The phrase, 'melt the fat away' is usually unsubstantiated marketing.  But in the case of injectible drug, Kybella, the FDA found it works. Karen Taggart is willing to give it a shot.

"I can lose weight. I can gain weight, and it's still there," she said.

Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Adair Blackledge said fat under the chin, double chin, whatever you call it, is a common complaint.

"It's this little fat that's found right under the chin that bothers so many patients,"  he said.

The key ingredient in Kybella is Deoxycholic Acid.

"It's the first FDA-approved injectible that actually melts the fat," said Dr. Blackledge.

And he said the fat will never return.

Dr. Blackledge said on average, he uses 10 to 25 injections per patient, depending on the amount of targeted fat. He said there is only mild discomfort during the injections. Dr. Blackledge said patients can expect to see some results within a week, and optimal results within a month.

Patient satisfaction is 89% because of consistent results in two areas under the chin.

"Number one, how much definition they got in their neck, and number two, how much fat was melted" said Dr. Blackledge.

Dr. Blackledge said Kybella is expected to draw large numbers of men.

"Every man, including myself, when we go to button our white collar shirt and go to work, the first thing we notice is this," added the doctor. pointing to the area under his chin. "There are no visible signs that you've done it, which is huge. Guys don't like talking about this. They don't want anyone to know that they've done this."

Kybella costs between $600 and $1,200. Common side effects are generally mild and include redness, swelling and bruising, none of which concerns Taggart.

"Not really," she said. "I just want the fat to go away."

Kybella is just now coming on the market, so it's very limited in supply to consumers. Only a select group of plastic surgeons nationwide has been trained to administer it.  Currently, Dr. Blackledge is the only Mississippi physician performing the procedure.
