Got bed bugs? Call Roxy. She's the first dog in Mississippi trained to detect bed bugs.
She was trained by Sportworks K-9 trainer David Livingston. Roxy is a German Shepherd European pure bred working dog, and while most dogs of her kind are sniffing for narcotics, Roxy is on the hunt for those nasty, hidden little creatures.
Livingston said training her to sniff out bed bugs, was much like training for narcotics. The process took about 4 months.
"We started out, we used micro scent traces and then bed bugs for the odors," said Livingston.
If you need Roxy's superior sniffing skills in your home or business, you can find her at Harvard Pest Control. A worker there, Colton McMurray, says for apartment owners, it could take all day for a human to detect the bugs, but Roxy can get the job done much faster.
"Say you have some apartments, it will take all day," said McMurray. "Whereas with Roxy, she cuts it in probably a quarter of the time, and we know exactly where the bed bugs are."
The next critters Livingston says he's hoping to train man's best friend to detect? Termites. Stay tuned for that.
