JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson fire investigators say smoking materials not properly discarded caused an early morning fire in West Jackson.

The fire sparked on Monday in the 1300 block of Perkins Street. When our crew arrived on the scene the home appeared fully engulfed in flames.

The house is now a total loss. Jackson Fire Department Division Fire Chief Cleotha Sanders says no one was home when the fire started. A Jackson police officer spotted the fire and called the fire in.

"I just want to thank the police for being on there job because they're the ones who saw the fire start so they are the ones that started everything and got the firemen here and put everything out," said Lynda Conley, a Jackson resident who lives across the street from where the fire started.

The fire also damaged a pick-up truck parked at the house next door.
