JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A day full of activities for the whole community will do double duty this weekend at Fondren Park.

OurFondren, the neighborhood association serving the residential needs of the greater Fondren area, will host Fondren Appreciation Day, honoring the Jackson Police and Fire Departments.

This is the third year in a row for the special emphasis event.

“There is so much we want to do for our community, but so many times, we are limited in manpower or finances,” says Susan Margaret Barrett, OurFondren president.

“We decided this was the perfect opportunity to make it a day of things we love in Fondren…celebrating our city, neighborhood and those protecting us", Barrett continued.

Beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, Rainbow Co-Op’s Luke and Charlotte Lundemo will lead a park clean up that includes working in the community garden there. From 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., OurFondren will grill free burgers and hotdogs and provide water activities for the kids.

Food vendors Pop Culture Pops and Hog Heaven BBQ will have food for sale and then, at 7 p.m., it’s free pizza, popcorn and the Disney movie, “Big Hero 6,” shown on the big screen at the park stage.

As for the “appreciation” component, Barrett tells that this Saturday’s event gives a tangible way for neighbors to simply say “thanks” to those that daily put their lives on the line.

“We really want them to know that we recognize their hard work and dedication. So many times we hear criticism about our city and our neighborhoods, but we want our first responders to know that we know the time and effort they put into their jobs and how much they care.”

OurFondren will solicit ideas from event-goers on Saturday to see what needs there may be for park improvements.
