JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

One of the most complicated parts of the State Capitol renovation project is currently underway.

The work is happening on the lantern level. That's the small dome structure the Eagle sits on top of.

The work involves structural repair, demolition and replacing old materials with new ones. One of the architects overseeing the renovation project says, overall, the exterior work is about 75 percent complete.

"We're hoping to finish the main part of the work by the end of the year and then there will probably be some little things that take a little bit longer than that but we're hoping the scaffolding will be down and all of the main work will be done by then," says Lawson Newman, an a Project Architect with WFT Architects.

Lawson hopes additional funding will become available to eventually tackle some work on the inside of the Capitol.
