JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A shootout at a Valero gas station in south Jackson Tuesday night on Cooper Road left a woman and her two-year-old niece almost caught in the crossfire.

Witnesses say a group of black males pulled up in a truck and quickly got involved in a confrontation with a group already on the parking lot. That's when shots rang out. It appears someone inside a second truck fired at several people on the gas station parking lot.

The owner of the store allowed us to see his surveillance video of the gunfight. You can see as the shots were fired, several people scrambled, one of them nearly crawling to get out of the line of fire; the woman and her two year old niece among them.

"As I was walking outside, it just sounded like gunshots were passing my ear, the woman told us. "So my first natural instinct was to cover her and try to get back inside to safety you know. Cause I mean she's only two, and I was trying to protect her more than anything."

The woman and the child were not injured, but the SUV they were in was hit by several shots.

ATF agents were on the scene along with JPD. Those involved in the shooting fled the area.
