Reward for summer readers at back to school celebration

The City of Jackson and the United Way are inviting families to the Jackson Convention Complex to help prepare for school. Jackson students in grades K-through-8 are invited to receive a free backpack and school supplies Saturday, July 25 at the city's annual back-to-school celebration.

It's first-come, first-served and students must have an adult with them to receive a backpack. They must also be able to prove they've been reading this summer.

"We're just asking they read a book and write a brief summary of what that book is and bring it with them to the event," said Bridget Townsend, the City of Jackson's Director of Youth Initiatives with the Mayor's Office. "We don't want their official reading log they have to have for school. This is just an extra reading log that they'll bring because we'll keep those with us.”

You can print one of the reading logs from the Alignment Jackson website or the City of Jackson website.
