BRANDON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

"It's mentally tough, physically tough, emotionally tough," said Ben Barrett of Brandon. "I said it for years sitting on the couch, I can do that. When you're standing up there in front of those lights, it changes. It's a beast."

So the 31-year-old husband, father, and Mississippi National Guard Combat Medic, unleashed his inner beast, and competed this year on NBC's American Nina Warrior Military Edition. His episode will air nationwide in the next few weeks.

"The hardest part is your grip strength, because they constantly test your upper body strength," he said. "Around here it's very hard to train for that because we don't have mountains to climb, so you have to improvise."

We watched Barrett as he wrapped his hands around two thick, hanging ropes outside The Club in Brandon. Standing between the ropes, he pulled his way to the top, then paused and dipped his body down to work a few more muscle groups.

"I train every day, get up at 4:30, I go run, and then I work out at lunch," he told us. "Push ups, burpees, jump rope a lot, lot of cardio, lot of upper body."

At the urging of his wife Tori, Barrett first made the cut for American Ninja Warrior Military Edition last year, but was disqualified for grabbing a forbidden piece of the obstacle course. He did not appear on the show.

The experience made him push even harder this time.

"I wanted to come back with a vengeance for Season 7, and so far I've done that. You gotta be resilient, you can't give up," he says.

Barrett can't disclose how he fared in the competition, but assures us he'll try out for the show again next year.

"I have four kids, and it makes me happy for them to say my dad is an American Ninja Warrior," he says. "It comes on Monday night at 7. Just watch for the San Pedro City Finals. You should see my face on there."
