FLOWOOD, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

This week all 10 of Mississippi's National Guard Recruiting centers are back open, but this time better prepared. The state announced that their guard recruiting staff is now armed.

Last week the centers were closed amid security concerns after the shooting in Chattanooga, where four Marines were killed.

Lt. Colonel Christian Patterson says this is just one of several changes to improve security.

"We have made all the necessary plans and preparations in order to ensure our storefront recruiting offices are safe," said Patterson. "We want to let everyone know out there that these places are safe places to go, and we encourage everyone to come out and enlist in the Mississippi National Guard because it's one of the best jobs in the state."

Across the country, armed citizens are standing guard in front of recruiting offices. Last week Major General Collins sent out at statement telling people that wasn't needed in Mississippi. Collins said, when people show up with these weapons, it creates confusion and increases the risk of injury.

Lieutenant Colonel Christian Patterson said,

"Were open for business, were looking for great candidates to enter the Mississippi National Guard," added Lt. Col. Patterson. We have done all the necessary plans and preparation in order to ensure that all of our facilities throughout the Magnolia State are safe."

The guard is also placing armored security vehicles at their storefront locations. They say it's being used as a tool to entice recruits, and is just a static display.
