Pelahatchie house fire under investigation

PELAHATCHIE, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Emergency responders in Rankin County are investigating what caused a house to go up in flames early Thursday morning.

The house, on Highway 80 in Pelahatchie, caught fire around 4:30 a.m.

Firefighters doused it with water for about an hour, but there was no luck saving the house.

Officials on the scene told us an elderly woman owns the house, but she was not home when the fire started.

"It could have been a whole lot worse. You know you can get objects back as long as you have insurance, but you want to make sure no loved ones are hurt, no firemen were injured, so we're feeling good about the situation," says Bob Wedgeworth, the Director of Rankin County Emergency Operations.

Wedgeworth says a family friend was living in the house, but he was not there when it caught fire.
