Jackson native Zack Bird joins the M-Braves

PEARL, MS (MississippiBraves.com) - Jackson native Zack Bird has been acquired by the Atlanta Braves and assigned to Double-A Mississippi. The right-handed pitcher will join the club in Birmingham for tonight's game. RHP Ryne Harper and INF Emerson Landoni have both been activated off the disabled list. In corresponding moves, INF Luis Mateo, LHP Hunter Cervenka and LHP Mitch Lambson have all been promoted to Triple-A Gwinnett.

Bird, 21, was 5-7 with a 4.75 ERA in 19 games (17 starts) at High-A Rancho Cucamonga this season. He had 95 strikeouts in 89 innings of work with the Quakes. Right-handers were hitting just .211 against Bird this season. A native of Jackson, MS, Bird was acquired by the Braves in yesterday's 13-player trade between Atlanta, Los Angeles and Miami. He was originally selected by the Dodgers in the ninth round of the 2012 draft out of Murrah High School.

Harper, 26, had been on the DL since July 11. He joined the M-Braves on May 24. In 10 outings, he posted a 1.62 ERA and struck out 17 batters in 16.2 innings pitched. He began the season on the disabled list at Triple-A Gwinnett before being activated and transferred to Rome on May 22 where he tossed 1.2 innings. In 48 outings with the M-Braves last season, Harper went 9-5 with a 2.58 ERA. He posted career highs in wins (9), games (48), innings (76.2) and strikeouts (93). The Nashville, TN, native was originally selected by the Braves in the 37th round of the 2011 draft.

Landoni, 26, had been on the DL since July 25. He was hitting .277 with 17 extra-base hits through 83 games at Double-A Mississippi this season. He was named Southern League Player of the Week (July 6-12) and had an .815 slugging percentage in those six contests. Landoni is hitting .365 against southpaws and has a .357 average thus far for the month of July. The Maracay, Venzuela, native was signed by the Braves as a free agent on December 20, 2011.

Mateo, 25, joined the M-Braves on July 28. He hit .231 in three games. Mateo began the season at Double-A Tulsa where he hit .258 with 13 extra-base hits through 50 games with the Drillers. He hit .313 against lefties. He also appeared in seven games at Triple-A Oklahoma City. Mateo was also selected as a 2015 Texas League Mid-Season All-Star. A native of Puerto Rico, Mateo was signed by the Braves on July 28, 2015. He was originally selected by the Cardinals in the 20th round of the 2008 draft.

Cervenka, 25, joined the M-Braves on July 22. He did not allow a run in two relief appearances. Cervenka began the season at Double-A Tennessee where he went 1-0 with one save and a 2.08 ERA. He was then promoted to Triple-A Iowa where he appeared in 12 games, going 0-1 with an 11.08 ERA. He was signed by the Braves on July 7 out of the Atlantic League (Indy). He made three scoreless appearances at Triple-A Gwinnett. Cervenka was originally selected by the Red Sox in the 27th round of the 2008 draft. He was acquired by the Cubs along with Michael Bowden on April 21, 2012, in a deal for Marlon Byrd and cash.

Lambson, 25, joined the M-Braves on July 17. He did not allow a run in five appearances, posting a record of 1-0 with two saves. Lambson appeared in two games at Triple-A Gwinnett and gave up two earned runs. He began the season at Double-A Corpus Christi where he posted a record of 2-1 with a 2.60 ERA in 11 relief appearances. Lambson moved up to Triple-A Fresno, recording a 2.60 ERA in 13 games with the Grizzlies. The Oregon native was acquired by the Braves in a cash trade with Houston on July 6. He was originally selected by the Astros in the 19th round of the 2011 draft.
