Hinds County Sheriff warns about 'Jury Warrant' telephone scam

HINDS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Hinds County Sheriff’s Department is warning people that the “Jury Warrant” telephone scam has started again.

Several people have called the Sheriff’s Department in regards to this particular scam.

In all cases the scammers will call (or leave a voicemail message).

In most cases the scammers identify themselves as personnel of the Hinds County Sheriff’s Department or officers of the Hinds County Court.

The scammers will tell you that you have received a summons for jury duty and you failed to show up. They will tell you a warrant has been issued for your arrest.

The scammers will then give you one of two scenarios:

1. Report to the courthouse at 407 E. Pascagoula St. and call me (the scammer) back.

2. Go to a store and get a prepaid card such as Green Dot or Western Union and call me (the scammer) back.  The scammer will then ask you to read the number of the card to him.

Many victims have said there were a few things that made the call believable:

1. The scammers had no accents or southern type accents.

2. The scammers knew about Jackson (address of stores and address of courthouse, etc.)

3. The scammers knew about law enforcement and the court system.

4. The scammers came off as professional.

All of the information coming from the scammers such as addresses or names of court officials is easily found on the internet.  No one from the Hinds County Courts will ever ask you for payment over the phone.

Anyone who receives a call or voicemail message is urged to write down as much information as possible about the call including names, phone numbers, agency name used, and payment instructions, and call the Hinds County Sheriff’s Department, Criminal Investigations at 601-974-2914.
