Most schools are back in session and it means we all need be aware of school zones and school buses.

In 2009, Nathan Key, a 5-year-old was killed when a vehicle illegally passed his school bus as he was unloading. Nathan’s Law was created in response to that tragedy.

It requires motorists to stop at least 10 feet from a school bus when children are loading or unloading. It authorizes a charge of felony assault and a prison sentence of up to 20 years for motorists convicted of illegally passing a school bus that, in the process, results in injury or death.

It also prohibits school bus drivers from using cell phones, wireless communication devices, while operating the bus. And it increases the fine for passing a stopped school bus.

Consider This:

Slow down, pay attention and follow the rules when you are traveling in school zones and near school buses. Nathan’s Law was created because of a terrible tragedy. We need to make sure another tragedy never happens.
