CONSIDER THIS: Airport Improvements

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Jackson municipal airports have been under new leadership since earlier this year when Carl Newman became CEO after serving many years in airport management positions in Houston and Phoenix. Working in those major markets gave him some great experience that will benefit our metro air operations.

Consider This:

There is lots of potential for industrial growth near the Jackson International facility which includes extending East Metro Parkway in Rankin County. That road now comes to an abrupt halt not far from the Dogwood shopping development in Flowood. Plans are to extend that parkway and ultimately connect with Highway 80 and I-20.

Another opportunity is Hawkins Field. Newman says Hawkins Field, Jackson’s original airport, should be busier and he is focused on growing the traffic at that facility. With the location near downtown Jackson, Jackson State and the medical corridor, it could be a prime entrance for general aviation business travelers.

The foundation for air operations is solid. With a few tweaks and terminal upgrades the experience for travelers will improve and should lead to more traffic. The available land and facilities around the International property is also a wonderful recruiting tool for industrial developers.

It’s exciting to think about the potential and how fortunate we are to have these resources. Hopefully Newman’s vision will materialize over the coming years and our region will enjoy the benefits of these valuable assets.
