CONSIDER THIS: Security for the State Fair

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The standoff between the Jackson Police Department and the Mississippi Fair Commission was frustrating. Providing protection for the hundreds of thousands of people who attend the annual event is a top priority. It is unacceptable that their safety could have been jeopardized because leaders of the two groups couldn’t work together to resolve the issue. Fortunately, that didn’t happen.

Consider This:

An agreement has been reached between the City of Jackson and the State Fair Commission. JPD has agreed to provide 10 officers to work 8 hour shifts and the Commission will pay for 10 more off duty officers. The agreement also states that the Commission will seek funding for police protection and traffic control for future State Fairs and the Dixie National Rodeo.

That is a good move. If the fair is generating millions of dollars for the city, as the fair commission claims, there should be more than enough to cover the costs for law enforcement. Maybe it’s just an accounting change that redirects that revenue to the JPD budget. Maybe the fair commission works to change the rules so the group can pay JPD directly. Maybe it could come from accommodations tax money. Regardless of what the future financial model looks like, right now it is about the safety of the people attending the fair. Thank goodness the two groups figured out a way to make that happen.
