STARKVILLE (HailState.com) – Putting together the best showing of his young Bulldog career to date, Mississippi State’s Quinndary Weatherspoon was named SEC Freshman of the Week on Monday.
Weatherspoon has quietly put together an impressive rookie campaign through six games, with his best performance coming in a 76-51 victory against UT Martin on Saturday. The Canton, Miss., native earned a career-high 16 points on 6-of-6 shooting, including a 2-for-2 mark from three-point range.
The MSU freshman also recorded a pair of steals and 3 rebounds in MSU’s win against the Skyhawks.
In 112 total minutes this season, Weatherspoon has totaled 52 points (8.7 per game) on 20-of-35 shooting and is 5-of-13 from long distance. He has also pulled down 17 rebounds.
“I’m honored to get this award, but all credit goes to my teammates and to my coaches,” Weatherspoon said. “I just do what coach tells me to do, and I play within the offense. My shot was falling on Saturday, and I was happy with that it helped out the team.”
This is Weatherspoon’s first-career SEC weekly honor and the second for MSU this year. Gavin Ware was named SEC Player of the Week after the season’s opening week. Weatherpoon is the first Bulldog to earn SEC Freshman of the Week since Craig Sword on March 11, 2013. That season Sword won the laurel twice, while Ware was honored once.
