JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A special 3 On Your Side Taking Back Our Neighborhoods report aims to get some insight from incoming Hinds County Sheriff Victor Mason on holiday safety.

Mason was at the Mississippi Law Enforcement Officer's Training Academy in Pearl on Monday. He's there, this week, with other newly elected sheriffs from all over the state, for orientation.

Mason says,"It's required by the state that we all have to go through and, so far, I've made a lot of contacts. These are guys that I'll be calling on and vice versa."

The veteran lawman had this to say about holiday safety in the Jackson metro area.

"Well, Howard, it boils down to common sense."

It's a message Mason says he and other law enforcement officers have been preaching for years.

For example, when you're shopping, don't leave your packages in your vehicle in plain view. Many shoppers go in the daytime thinking they will avoid criminals. Not necessarily, he says.

"Don't let daylight fool ya," he says. "They can see you before you can see them. And a lot of the crooks, sadly believe it or not, judge you by what you drive. They see a Mercedes, they think of money, so be careful, be mindful that you are being watched."

Mason says to never leave your vehicle unlocked and running; advice you'd think most of us would have learned by now.

"But unfortunately, some get relaxed and they feel, I'm just going to run in for a minute and I'll be right back out," said Mason. "It doesn't take them but a half a second to put it in drive and go."

And, of course, don't drink and drive.

"Also, don't text and drive," says Mason. "Stop. No message is worth your life."

Mason says lawmen and women will be out in force trying to protect you, as always, during the holidays and everyday, but they need your help.

"Police can't do it all and don't expect for us to do it all, because we're gonna have our hands full," he says. "But we need the public's help. We need the media's help in getting the message out."

The message that the bad guys never take a holiday break.

"I just hope everybody has a safe holiday and let's be mindful that they're out there."
