ADAMS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

On Wednesday, Deputy Karren Ewing of Adams County received several calls and texts concerning horses and dogs starving at 11 Grafton Heights.

Nan Garrison, a local attorney and volunteer with the Natchez Adams County Humane Society, and also Barbara Platte, a volunteer with the NACHS, also received similar calls, as well as the Sheriff’s Office Dispatch.

Deputy Ewing, Garrison and Platte went to the location of the reported neglect and found no one home.

Deputy Ewing noticed 4 horses, which looked to be in fair to good condition, but they had no food, water or shelter.

They also found 4 pit-bull puppies, about 8 weeks old and underweight, with no food & no water.

"They had one dog house that had standing water with a tiny bit of hay in it," says Deputy Ewing. "They were in a pen full of mud and feces. They were hungry and shivering from being cold and wet."

She says that they found 2 chained dogs in a lot behind the house. One was a pit-bull and the other was a German Shepherd, both probably less than a year old.

Deputy Ewing says that they also found a small Catahoula Cur only 6 months old.

"This particular puppy was so weak he couldn’t keep standing and was unable to bark," says Deputy Ewing. "All 3 of these had no food or water, covered in flies and extremely underweight, chained in the open with insufficient shelter. The temperature was said to be dropping into the 30’s last night."

There were also 2 dead dogs covered in flies and maggots.

Deputy Ewing says that 2 men arrived at the home who knew the owner, but no one would give them contact information for that person.

The decision was made to remove the dogs and puppies from the home due to their condition.

"I feel without a doubt the Catahoula Cur and one of the 4 puppies would not have made it thru the night," says Deputy Ewing.

All 7 were transported to a local veterinarian for evaluation.

The vet says the Catahoula Cur is 25 pounds under weight and his condition is still serious. The tiniest of the puppies is also in critical condition.

The owner of the property and the animals has been identified as George Griffin who is reportedly out of town.

Charges of animal cruelty and neglect are being filed.
