RANKIN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Mississippi law enforcement officers say if a mass shooting should occur here in our state, there are thousands of officers already trained and ready to respond.

Major Thomas Tuggle teaches the Advance Law Enforcement Rapid Response training course, at MLEOTA (Mississippi Law Enforcement Officers Training Academy). Since 2007, 8,000 officers have completed the course in Mississippi.

"If there's an incident in a small municipality or large municipality, they have all been trained the same," said Major Tuggle. "They can all go in and work seamlessly to find the threat and once they locate the threat, they eliminate it."

The officers receive training in extracting civilians, handling  explosives, and taking out designated threats, all of which we saw in the San Bernadino shooting incident.

Tuggle says one officer who completed the training, responded to the Delta State shooting incident in September, and later thanked him.

"We use simunition rounds, we teach these guys how to ID explosive devices, IEDS," Added Major Tuggle. "You can never know when something like this will happen. We can only rely on Intel from our federal brothers for this, but the enemy is training to utilize the element of surprise, they look for soft targets, so all we can do is just be prepared and I feel pretty good this is where we are now."
