RIDGELAND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Rescue and recovery on the Reservoir is expected to become safer and more efficient. That's thanks to "Fortitude," a new addition to the Ridgeland fire departments fleet of boats.

On Monday morning, the city hosted a dedication ceremony for the new rescue and recovery boat. Unlike the city's current rescue boats, "Fortitude" is large enough to carry several tons, including large air tanks. During a dive, support staff on board will be able to supply divers with air from the deck to underwater. That means divers will no longer have to come up for air every 20 to 30 minutes.

"This allows us to put a diver down and the air issue is no longer really there," said Ridgeland Assistant Fire Chief Steve Wilson. "He can concentrate on the job and he's not worried about what his air situation is constantly through the dive, so its really good for the diver."

The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality donated Fortitude to the Ridgeland fire department. Ridgeland firefighters put in several hours of work to turn Fortitude into a rescue and recovery boat. Several community businesses and organizations also pitched in to help offset costs and build additions to Fortitude.
