CLINTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

UPS says that 18, 000 packages nationwide will be delivered every day in December.

In Clinton, the Christmas decorations are up and empty delivery boxes are on the curb.

This is a busy time of year for UPS, FedEx, and mailmen. But beware, porch pirates are watching those deliveries.

There have been reports that packages were stolen from at least two homes in Clinton.

"We always want people to be aware; be especially watchful if there is suspicious activity in the neighborhood," said Sgt. Michael Kelly. "Contact police so we can come out and investigate."

Video was taken last year of a similar front porch robbery. A package was delivered to a Byram home where the delivery man covered up the package with the door mat.

Later, a stranger comes along, grabs the package and then takes off.

Luckily, two surveillance cameras caught the whole thing on tape and the porch pirate was later caught.

Clinton police have offered some suggestions on how to keep your packages safe this holiday season.

"FedEx also has some options as well as other companies where you can schedule your delivery time," said Sgt. Kelly. "You can actually go into the tracking section and tell them what times are best to find you at your residence."

Here are some other tips:

  • Have packages sent to your work place if your employer allows it.
  • Have items delivered from a chain store to their local store for safe keeping.
  • Have your neighbors or family watch out for package deliveries.
