JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The store clerk, who police say shot a customer, went before a judge Wednesday.

Jackson police arrested 19-year-old Gerpeet Singh shortly after the shooting took place at USA Gas on Terry Road.

Singh is charged with one count of aggravated assault. He was denied bond by the judge and he will have a preliminary hearing in Hinds County Court on December 21.
As for why Singh shot the man, his friends and relatives who were in court say he felt threatened.

They say he had been robbed and assaulted in the past and believed he was about to be targeted.

Police tell a different story.

"According to the clerk, there was some sort of conflict between the two," said Deputy Chief Amy Barlow. "The complainant entered the store, the video doesn't show any conflict so it contradicts what the clerk is saying."

Wednesday, family members of the shooting victim identified him as 20-year -d Octavious Taylor. He was shot at least once in the abdomen.

Taylor was listed in stable condition at last check and still had to undergo another surgery.
