JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

In a Monday morning press conference, Jackson State has announced it will hire Tony Hughes as its next head football coach,

The Forest native has been an assistant at Mississippi State for the last 7 years. Hughes served as the Bulldogs safeties coach & recruiting coordinator. He has had several assistant coach stops, including Ole Miss and Southern Miss.

Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen said the following on the JSU hire:

“Tony is fulfilling a lifelong dream of becoming a head coach, and I am very proud of him. He has been a loyal assistant and a tireless recruiter. He’s done a tremendous job in helping elevate our program in our seven years here. Jackson State is not only getting an excellent head coach, but a great person and family man. We watched his son Jay come through our program, graduate and serve as a captain on our 2014 team that spent five weeks ranked No. 1. Tony’s values will continue to make him successful. I wish him and his family all the best.”

JSU fired Harold Jackson in October. His tenure at Jackson State lasted just 17 games. Former JSU quarterback Derrick McCall served as the interim head coach for the final six games of the regular season. His status on Hughes' staff is uncertain at this time.

2016 will mark the 4th head coach in 4 seasons for the Tigers (Comegy, Jackson, McCall, Hughes).
