LAWRENCE COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A rumor on social media prompted parents to pick their kids up from Lawrence County High School Tuesday morning.

Because of the rumored threat, Lawrence County Superintendent Tammy Fairburn has informed us that the school has initiated its crisis response plan.

They are taking the necessary steps to ensure students' safety by ramping up security on campus.  Extra law enforcement has been called to the school.  Fairburn said the campus is not on lock down.

Earlier Tuesday morning, Lawrence County Sheriff Joel Thames also said the school was not on lock down, but they were investigating rumors of a threat to the school on social media.

Sheriff Thames said they are in the early stages of the investigation and are on what he called “rumor watch” on social media.

Thames said there does not appear to be an immediate threat to any students at the school.

School is in session at Lawrence County High.

We will track this story as the investigation uncovers more information and update as necessary.
