Mothers’ Milk Bank, Mississippi (MMBM) delivered its first batch of bottles to Merit Health River Oaks Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) on Dec. 17. The NICU at Merit Health River Oaks is staffed 24 hours a day with specialized neonatal nurses and physicians focused on the needs of newborn patients.
MMBM is the only organization in the state accredited by the Human Milk Banking Association of North America. The nonprofit is medically-supported and professionally-staffed, processing, storing and dispensing human breast milk for Mississippians, with collection depots in Oxford, Columbus and Tupelo.
Research shows that human milk is life-saving, especially for infants who are preterm or who have special medical challenges and illnesses. According to the March of Dimes, Mississippi leads the nation in the number of preterm births.
