PARCHMAN, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

An inmate at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman was fatally stabbed by a fellow inmate at Unit 29 this morning.

Carlos Jack, 43, was pronounced dead at the prison hospital shortly after 10 a.m. The assault occurred about an hour earlier.

The suspect is 35-year-old Myran Shanks, and investigators have the weapon, a homemade shank.

Jack was serving a 25-year sentence for armed robbery in Lowndes County. He was convicted Sept. 5, 2002.

Shanks has been in prison since 1998. He is serving a total of 30 years for burglary, aggravated assault, and grand larceny in Tallahatchie County and armed robbery in Panola County.

There were no other inmates involved and no other injuries. The investigation is ongoing.

There will be no visitation this weekend at Parchman, and commissary privileges are suspended until further notice.
