NEWTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

When Newton's mayor told the city they needed to find a way to fix problems, closing the police department was an idea met with plenty of concern.

"I was against it from the start," said Newton Police Chief Harvey Curry. "A city that large cannot stand to go without a police department."

Chief Curry was chief among those concerned. Mayor David Carr had talked about the possibility of closing down the city's police department and letting the sheriff's department run patrols as a way to save Newton some much-needed money. But at Tuesday's meeting, Mayor Carr scrapped the idea.

"It's a relief for everyone. I don't want to live in no city without a police department, said Chief Curry. "If something happens inside that city, you'll have to wait on a county deputy to come to you."

Chief Curry says the idea never should have been suggested in the first place. Mayor Carr says he understands closing down the police department is a big undertaking. He says he never went very far with the idea, and he has some other less painful ideas that will likely see more support.

That may mean paying more for health insurance, not replacing people when they retire, more part-time help or pay cuts. He says They're all options that will take some time, but Mayor Carr says when you're trying to save $350,000, you can't just start checking off a list.
