JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Many people are lending a helping hand during this holiday season. One group did just that at Poindexter Park in Jackson, with volunteers cooking meals for the less fortunate.

It was a day of food and fellowship in Jackson's Poindexter Park as the less fortunate where able to choose from a spread of home cooked dishes. One of the men, known as New York, said he enjoys the festivities and he appreciates others lending the helping hand.

One man known as "New York," said, "They feed the people Even though I have a little job and I work, I come out here and hang out with these guys. These are still my people you know. This is where I come from."

Grilled steak, chicken and sausage filled the grills as members of the Mississippi Racers Club set up for breakfast, lunch and dinner. One of the organizers, Kenneth Kennedy, said it's all about giving back to the community.

Kenneth Kennedy said, "We are just trying to reach out and show the less fortunate that there is someone out here that cares about them. We want them to know there is someone out here who is trying to do something positive for the community."

About 100 people came out to get a plate and said thank you to the men and women serving food. Kennedy said it's a great feeling knowing that others care.

Kennedy said, "Our main goal here with the Mississippi Racers is just to reach out and touch someone. If we touched at least one person and change their life and get them back on the right track, then that's a blessing."

New York said, "Just because someone is down and on their luck and homeless, they are still people, a good person and good people."
