'Season of Giving' awards furniture to Brandon man

BRANDON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

An entire neighborhood came out on a chilly Monday morning to watch Francis Wendling receive something truly heartwarming.

"He is an orphan, and he is alone except for us, and he always wanted a house of his own," says longtime friend Teresa Arnold. "He's never had that. His parents died when he was very young."

Wendling, who is deaf, has been living in a government-assisted apartment. But he's been saving his pennies and working with Community Bank to buy a new home in Brandon.

"We were able to find the right budget for him, which allowed him to buy this house, and I can't tell you how excited we are for him today," says Jason Sykes, Community Bank's Vice President, Mortgage Division.

But no one is more excited than Wendling himself.

Miskelly Furniture rounded out its Season of Giving furniture giveaway program with a new living and dining room set for the 73-year-old.

"When we entered the contest we were just thrilled that Miskelly would do this, and select him for some beautiful furniture," Arnold says.

Wendling will spend the first night in his new home on December 29, ringing in the new year in a way made possible by people around him who care.

"This has been a longtime dream of his, to have a home of his own," Arnold tells us.
