DALLAS (SouthernMiss.com) – Bowl week finally has arrived for the Southern Miss football team.
The Golden Eagles, which notched nine wins already this season and captured the C-USA West Division championship, make their first bowl appearance since the 2011 Hawai’i Bowl and its fourth-ever bowl game this week in the state of Texas, having also played in the Sun Bowl in El Paso twice (1953, 1954) and the Houston Bowl (2002).
For the week, Todd Monken’s squad calls Dallas home after arriving Monday morning in advance of this weekend’s Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Bowl against Pac-12 foe Washington. It marks the first-ever meeting between the two schools in the sport of football.
That home for the Golden Eagles for the next six days, The Omni Hotel Downtown, sits on the edge of downtown in the third largest city in the state of Texas.
Southern Miss stuck to its normal game-week schedule after arriving in Texas, with the players enjoying their normal off day on their first day in the Lone Star State. After an early afternoon team meeting, the Golden Eagle squad enjoyed some free time for the remainder of the day to get adjusted to Dallas.
The normal practice schedule returns for Southern Miss Tuesday, as they kick off bowl week practices at the school’s assigned practice facility for the week at Highland Park High School. The team will utilize midday practices each day up until game day so that they will also be able to enjoy some of the sights, which will include a team welcome party, a visit to AT&T Stadium and a movie screening.
The Zaxby's Heart of Dallas Bowl takes place this Saturday, Dec. 26, at 1:20 p.m. (CT), at the historic Cotton Bowl.
