JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A group of friends shared the true meaning of Christmas by giving back.

Dorothy Ayyash is a widow who has fallen on hard times. Ayyash lives at Wingard Home in Jackson without any family. On Christmas morning she received lots of unexpected hugs from a group of complete strangers.

"They could be home with their families and they're here with us, says Ayyash.

Decked out as Santa
s elves a group of friends and co-workers brought some Christmas gifts to Ayyash and others living at Wingard Home and Matt's House.

"It started with us doing it to talking to co-workers to talking to my family members and everyone was excited so they just pitched in and it became a big group thing, says Tougaloo student Trianna Humphrey.

With their own money, the cheerful givers bought enough goodies to put a smile on 80 people's faces.

"I want to make a change and I'm so fortunate to have things that others don't and I decided with a few of my other co-workers that we would start this year by giving back,
says Jackson State University student Amber Davis.

In the midst of the giving, Ayyash taught JSU student Jameese Bridges an important lesson.

"She made me realize someone has it worse than me, so I should stop complaining and be more grateful,
says Bridges.

"This place is a blessing in my life and the strangers that come in and share their love just put icing on the cupcake, says Ayyash.
