JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Is it too easy for people to get their hands on guns without a federal background check?

President Obama met with top officials on Monday. He wants to adopt tighter gun controls, but without congressional approval.

He is expected to sign off on a package of proposals that will curb the gun violence and crack down on unregulated gun sales.

Some gun purchases take place at gun shows or by private parties - a way to get around a federal background check.

Gun shop owner, Van Allen, has a federal firearms license and cannot sell a weapon without doing background checks on buyers.

"That can be an issue but until they start enforcing the laws that they already have and punish people that are doing this, to me expanding backgrounds checks is not going to help," Allen says.

Congressman Harper said while it is possible that increasing the number of prosecutions for crimes committed with a firearm could help reduce gun violence, limiting the Second Amendment is not the answer.

Allen agrees.

Front-running presidential candidate Donald Trump weighed in on Saturday on a campaign stop in Biloxi .

"So he's gonna sign another executive order having to do with the second amendment and having to do with guns?" said Trump. "I will veto that. I will unsign that so fast."

Meanwhile, the FBI has reported that 2015 was a record year for background checks on guns sales

The president's gun control action may strengthen reporting requirements for lost or stolen guns, as well.

Two years ago, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives suggested mandatory reporting of lost firearms to the federal agency. However, the gun industry successfully shot down the proposal.
