CANTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

In its first meeting since gaining three newly-elected supervisors, the Madison County Board of Supervisors swiftly voted to fire four county officials, most notably longtime county engineer Rudy Warnock and board attorney Mike Espy.

One by one, supervisors axed several positions in county government, some to the applause of the standing room-only crowd.

"I believe that every single position is vitally important in county government, from administrator to attorney to engineer, and I think we made a positive change," said Board President Trey Baxter.

Former Hinds County supervisor Tony Greer will be the new Madison County administrator.

Espy has been replaced by Katie Bryant Snell.

The county's road manager has also been replaced.

Resident Dr. Bill Howard said it's a stark contrast from the way he said the previous board operated, with money going to Warnock's contracts instead of roads.

"$1.2 million for a no-bid contract on an airport for private planes, when similar studies are done for $200,000? To grant that is burning money," Howard said.

Warnock told us by phone that if the county wants to cut ties, they can pay him what they owe him and he'll give them the files they need.

Now there's another concern: whether road projects in the county will come to a halt while the county transitions from Warnock to local engineering firm STANTEC.

"They going on hold. I've been here 17 years. They gonna stop. For how long, it'll be left to the engineer and this board," said District 5 Supervisor Paul Griffin.

Despite all that still needs to happen, Howard said he's encouraged by what he sees.

"I know they've done their homework. They've picked the best people they think they can get, and going forward, I expect them to perform, but if they don't, our people are going to find somebody that will," Howard said.
