JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Newly elected Hinds County Sheriff Victor Mason is in his new position as top cop of Hinds County.

Sheriff Mason is already discussing what he will be focusing on in his new role.

Mason has been in law enforcement for three decades. He worked as an officer at the Jackson Police Department, Hinds County Sheriff's Department, State Narcotics Division, Attorney General's Office, an FBI Task Force and the Secret Service.

He defeated Sheriff Tyrone Lewis as sheriff in last year's primaries.

Mason says it's a lifelong dream.

Now he has his hands full with longstanding issues facing the county.

"It's been busy, it's been busy. Going from one end of the building to the other and just trying to get everything organized."

The Hinds County Detention center in Raymond is his top priority.

Mason says, "I took a walk through the jail downtown and I saw improvements have been made. And I just left the  Raymond Jail and I'm going to do another tour down there. So the biggest thing is the jail,"

Jail breaks, overcrowding and a riot are all issues that officials have been dealing with at the detention center.

Last September, the U.S. Department of Justice investigated, issuing a decree about the state of the Hinds County Detention Center.

The DOJ has been monitoring the jail operations ever since.

The newly elected sheriff says critical staff changes are on his radar.

"The second thing is getting the enforcement side up to par so the citizens of Hinds County can be safe ."
