Airport board bill ruffles feathers

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A proposed bill to change the way airport board members are selected is raising some eyebrows.

Rankin county Senator Josh Harkins wants to give the Governor the power to appoint the board.

Currently the Jackson city council has that authority.

During the Year-End Review, Jackson Medgar Wiley Evers Airport CEO Carl Newman said the airport has an impact of 895 million dollars on the state economy.
He along with board members oppose a takeover.

Carl Newman said,
"The way we work to help the board fight this is to do the good job we've been doing all along again the staff here has made sure this airport is financially solvent today."

Senator Josh Harkins says skyrocketing ticket prices first inspired him to create a law, changing the board appointment process.

Senator Josh Harkins said,
"It's my opinion that the usefulness of a municipal type authority has run it's course, the population has grown outside the city of Jackson."

Senator Harkins says the airport is a big economic driver, more needs to be done to continue it's growth.

Harkins says his bill only deals with the board, airport revenue streams for the city would remain unchanged, yet
City council members say they oppose the changes.
