FLASHBACK to JANUARY 7, 1991: WLBT replaces the usual syndicated programming at 5:00 p.m. with a new evening newscast, anchored by Maggie Wade and Bert Case. The station had not produced a newscast in that time slot in decades, and it was an immediate success.

On that first broadcast, Bert interviewed Governor Ray Mabus from Mabus' office in the State Capitol. It was the day before the 1991 legislative session. Walt Grayson also brought his popular "Looking Around Mississippi" feature to the 5:00 newscast.

Weather duties were handled by Woodie Assaf, who had been doing the weather at WLBT since the station signed on the air in 1953. He also did the weather at noon and 6:00. Woodie retired in 2001 after more than 50 years in broadcasting. He died in 2009.

Bert retired from WLBT in 2014, but he continues to work in television. He was sidelined by an illness in the summer of 2015.

Maggie continues to anchor the 5:00 newscast, Walt still contributes his beloved feature stories, and the broadcast still tops the ratings each evening at 5:00.

Here's that first broadcast in its entirety:
