RIDGELAND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

On Thursday, dozens of officers took the "Below 100/Tactical Mindset," course at Holmes Community College in Ridgeland.

The class, hosted by the Ridgeland Police Department, focuses on reminding officers about practical ways to protect themselves.

The curriculum identifies not wearing seat belts, bullet proof vests and speeding as factors leading to officer deaths. The overall goal of "Below 100" is to keep the number of officer line of duty deaths under 100 in a year.

"It's a very touching, emotionally stirring class. I want them to get fired up about wearing their vests, wearing their seat belts, slowing down on these responses," says Lt. Brian Myers with the Ridgeland Police Department.

The Officer Down Memorial Down Page website says 129 officers died in the U-S in the line of duty in 2015. 1943 was the last year under 100 officers died in the line of duty in the U.S.
