Stokes Asking For Federal Investigation Into Police Pursuits

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

It was Jackson City Councilman Kenneth Stokes who said last week, black leaders should throw rocks, bottle and bricks at officers from other areas who chase suspects into Jackson.

Stokes held a town hall meeting Friday night at Jackson City Hall asking for input from concerned citizens.

Some held signs, others addressed the group. Stokes has sent a letter to Attorney General Loretta Lynch asking her to look into the police pursuits.

Stokes said, "Is race an issue? We say yes. We say yes and we can't wait until somebody we love is hurt."

Criminal Justice Professor, Jimmy Bell said, "in a chase people who are running from law enforcement, they're trying to gain every advantage they can to get away, whether it's reasonable or not.

You don't expect the offender to be reasonable. You do expect the police officers who have a sworn duty to protect communities to be reasonable."

Stokes is asking other council members to pass a resolution Tuesday opposing high speed chases by outside jurisdictions in Jackson.
