CLINTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Clinton Police officials confirmed Sunday morning that the man who barricaded himself in a hotel room, after saying he'd shot his girlfriend, has been arrested.

Clinton Police Chief Mike Warren said a man, identified as Derick Taylor of Jackson, called the police department around 8:20 a.m.

The unidentified woman was rushed to an area hospital.

Chief Warren said he believes the woman was shot in the head area and is currently in stable condition.  He also said he believes her injuries are non-life-threatening.

Warren also said he believes when Taylor wasn't looking, the woman was able to escape from the room.

Warren said Taylor gave up his weapon, a small caliber hand gun, after negotiators were inside the hotel room. He also said Taylor currently faces assault charges and officials are looking into Taylor's criminal history and more charges are possible.

Taylor barricaded himself inside the Quality Inn & Suites after the shooting.

Officials said the hotel was evacuated and at this time no other injuries have been reported.

Chief Warren commended the work of the SWAT Team, which is made up of multiple agencies.

Warren said, "I'm very pleased with the way things went today with Jackson, Hinds and our combination with them.  We've been training with them and going to responses with them for the better part of two years.  It's become a really good partnership."

We will update this story as more information becomes available.
