EDWARDS, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

All lanes of I-20 are back open after a tanker truck crash in Warren County that shut down the interstate last night and into the morning.

The wreck caused a messy domino affect creating a traffic nightmare for drivers on Tuesday.

The driver of the tanker, which was filled with 8,200 gallons of gasoline, lost control and crashed between the Flowers and Edwards exits late Monday night.

Emergency officials had this message Tuesday morning.

"Stay off the interstate. Find an alternative route, said Chuck Tate, with the Warren County Fire Service.

Hours after the sun came up the tanker was still flipped off the highway. The mess caused an even bigger mess extending for miles along the interstate.

"I'm late for work now. I called my boss to tell him we
re going to be late for work, said Edwards resident Curley Williams.

While some emergency crews worked to transfer remaining fuel from the wrecked tanker into another truck, others cleaned up gasoline that leaked into culverts under the interstate. Despite the mess authorities say this situation could have been a whole lot worse.

"There could have been a fire to go along with this which would have been catastrophic for what was going on,
said Tate.

Some say the traffic back-up on the other hand was as bad as they've seen in this area.

"This is the worst I've ever seen,
said Williams.

Authorities say the tanker truck driver was airlifted to UMMC with life-threatening injuries.
