YAZOO CITY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Mississippi River continues to swell tonight and the backwater is spilling over into the south Delta affecting Yazoo County.

Although the projected crest of the river has been lowered, it is still causing flooding headaches for people living in rural areas along the county.

Yazoo County Residents admit they're amazed how Mother Nature has turned there large green fields into lakes and their roads now rivers.

“If it gets any worse, I am going to catch up with Noah so he can show me how to build an ark, “ one Yazoo resident said.

“Farmers are moving their stuff out of the area, residents are preparing because they have been through this before,” Emergency Management Director Jack Willingham said.

Emergency Management Director Jack Willingham said the Yazoo River should crest early next week.

Although it is already above flood stage,  he said the flood elevation level in the county shouldn't be as bad as it was 2011.

“We had numbers in the flood-prone area upwards of 104, and it has now dropped closer to around 100. That is a good thing. That is a tremendous difference,” said Willingham.

So far, three main roads in county have been temporarily closed to traffic including Satartia-Holly Bluff Road. That road leads to Troy Williams two homes.

“The biggest fear is that you will lose everything,” said Williams.

Residents are praying that doesn't happen to Williams or any of their neighbors in Yazoo County.

“I hope the water will go away, so people can keep their houses and stuff,” Swinney said.

Panther Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is also temporarily closed due to flooding conditions.
