JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Jackson Municipal Airport Authority is looking out for economic development in Rankin County. This is happening while a bill is floating around the Mississippi legislature that Jackson officials fear could be an airport takeover attempt by the state.

In December, the JMAA board voted to enter into an Option to Lease agreement with Freedom Real Estate, LLC for a commercial development project off of Lakeland Drive and Airport Road on 30 acres of land in Flowood.

The company approached the  Airport Authority, according to Reverend James Henley, Jr., the Vice-Chair of JMAA.

"This was an unsolicited offer that was brought to us in December," he says. "Because of the time sensitive nature of the financial options we had a meeting in December. We are just doing what we always have done, economic development."

The Airport Authority is not selling, but only leasing the land.

This news comes as lawmakers consider changing the board makeup, including neighboring counties. The airport has been criticized for a fall in flight numbers and loss of high profile carriers.

JMAA is opposed to such a move.

Henley says, "This, to me, is a perfect example of how have been looking out for our communities. I really don't understand their logic and haven't heard it either other than the fact they just want to change it."

The proposed commercial and retail development project  n this land includes clothing and apparel, sporting goods, restaurants, jewelry, household goods, and banks according to JMAA.

If the real estate company chooses to go with the Option to Lease, then Airport Authority will hire appraisers to determine the fair market value of the property for lease.
