JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

There has been a great deal of controversy over Jackson's resistance to allow outside police jurisdictions to pursue suspects into the city.

City officials are opposed to it.

The issue came up again with a high speed chase on I-55 on Thursday morning. It began in Hazlehurst with a Walmart shoplifting incident.

Ironically, the vehicle was stolen.

MDOT video shows a maroon 1997 Ford F-150 truck speeding northbound on I-55 in the left lane. The tag number is HY6-046.

A police cruiser enters the video in hot pursuit.

The vehicle doesn't stop.

Police  got close enough to run the tag. It came back as a truck that has been stolen, possibly out of Jackson, because it had a Hinds County tag on it.

The woman would not yield to blue lights.

Hazlehurst police notified Byram police for assistance that the pursuit was going into their city.

Byram picked up the chase, according to Police Chief Luke Thompson.

"We assisted another agency when that pursuit was in our city and when it left our city we called it off," he says. "We didn't stop at Jackson because it was Jackson. We don't stop at the city limits because the elected officials don't want us there."

Thompson said Jackson police were notified of the pursuit when they broke it off.

JPD Officer Colendula Green said Thursday that JPD is not speaking on this pursuit and that they have no information. No word tonight on whether Jackson ever found that stolen vehicle or arrested anyone.

We reached out to Jackson Councilman Kenny Stokes for comment. He did not return our call.
