CLINTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

You will soon see more officers on the street in Clinton. The police department is expanding.

More patrol officers are needed, ultimately making it a safer place for residents and guests.

Brian Donaldson said, " I think the more the merrier."

The Clinton Police Department is beefing up its patrol by hiring 10 or more officers in the coming days.

Former Clinton Resident, Brian Donaldson, who still visits the city, says this is positive news he is happy to hear.

Donaldson said, "I really think the more police officers you have patrolling the area the safer the citizens will be in Clinton."

Clinton Police Chief Mike Warren said with a new and improved application process the department hopes to find officers with a high moral character and officers who demonstrate professional behavior.

Chief Mike Warren said, "We will do an open call. What we will do is have them sign a couple of waivers for information and a waiver of liability. We will give them a physical agility test which is a requirement for them to go to the academy. If they pass that we will bring them back later in the afternoon and will give them an entry level test."

Some of the new officers will operate inside the department's substation on the east side of the city.

It has been in operation for a little more than a year. Chief Warren said since it opened they have not seen an up tick in crime around the busy corridor.

Donaldson said, "I feel safe, my wife feels safe coming to Clinton shopping and doing whatever we need to do."

The open call will be held January 28th at Brighton Park beginning at 9am. To apply previous experience is not required.
