Ministers vow to fight airport takeover by state

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The looming battle over control of the Jackson Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport has caught the attention of a group of ministers.

The Business Ministerial Alliance of Mississippi called a press conference on the south steps of the state capitol Friday afternoon, saying the state is attempting what amounts to a hostile takeover of the airport's governing authority.

They say it will hurt the capital city now and in the long run and it won't happen without a fight.

Rev. Duane Pickett said, "After this press conference, what we're hoping for is sit down and begin to strategize, you know, what's really best. How do we move forward. How do we bring both sides together in order to get what's mutually beneficial for everybody involved."

Jackson city councilman Dekeither Stamps said, "Why won't the state just come talk to us instead of just take something? Let's just talk about it and maybe a statewide system may be viable and more economically feasible, but at least, allow the local municipalities to opt in."

Councilman Stamps says he believes the proposal by Senator Josh Harkins is part of a plan to create a statewide airport system.
