Neighbors on edge after double homicide in McComb

MCCOMB, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The discovery of a mother and son gunned down in their home has McComb police working closely with state forensic experts to find the killer.

At the same time, neighbors who live next to the home say they can't believe it even happened in the first place.

"It just shocked me, because it just don't feel right. I don't understand. Seemed like somebody should have heard something," said Reather Robinson, who used to live on Avenue L, not far from the crime scene.

None of the neighbors interviewed on Friday heard a thing, including Annette Byrd.

She knew the victims, 64-year-old Barbra Conerly and her son, 33-year-old Shawn Butler.

After all, they lived a few houses apart from each other.

"When I saw the police cars down there [Friday] morning, and went down there to see what was going on, and just been devastated all day long," Byrd said.

McComb police got the call Friday morning after someone came by the home and made the grisly discovery.

Police Chief Scott McKenzie says both victims had been shot.

They called the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation's Crime Scene Unit to help.

"Sad situation for everybody around here. It's a pretty quiet little neighborhood. I mean, everybody knows everybody right here, so very, very unusual for this location," McKenzie said.

Byrd agrees, says she's more apprehensive in the place she's called home for 42 years.

"It scares you a little bit, but we have an alarm and locks and everything. Just try to be as safe as we can. We never know when these things are gonna happen to anyone in any neighborhood," Byrd said.

McKenzie said there appeared to be evidence of forced entry to the rear door of the home, but that may not be related to this case.

He said they have no suspects at this time.
