JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Jackson Fire Department is working to prevent deadly fires and damage by installing free smoke detectors.

They made one stop on Reaves Street off McDowell Road.

Jackson Firefighters, the American Red Cross and Americorp members canvassed Ward Six Saturday.

They went door to door to see if families had working smoke alarms.

Firefighters installed the free devices in many homes throughout the area.

The home fire safety campaign was held in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Junior.

"We check to make sure that families have one working smoke alarms and two that they have a good plan, what they would do if they have a home fire or another type of emergency and we work with the families to make sure that they can become more prepared for different hazards they face," said Chase Munro with the American Red Cross.

Volunteers joined the fire safety effort. Homes on Dorgan, Combs, Winn, Mulberry, Gunda, Myrtlewood Streets and Shepwood Drive were also included.

"We make sure that people stay safe and we help the community, make sure that we're here for them, and no matter what's going on if they need us we're here for them," said Ian Walls with Americorps.

Jackson residents who would like to receive free smoke detectors can contact the City of Jackson at 601-960-1399.
