JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson may be no stranger to pothole problems, but one crater at Donald and West streets has several residents concerned because it's at least five feet deep.

"What brought it to my attention was that one of the neighbors that stays next door fell into the hole, and that's how we found out how deep it was," resident Felita Smith said in an interview Saturday.

Sunday afternoon Shelia Byrd, Director of Communications for the City of Jackson said, "The City has secured the location and utility locates are being performed. Once the locates are completed, the next available crew will be mobilized to make the repair".

We also received a photo showing crews at work on the pothole repairs.

Saturday Smith said the neighbor, who she said stands four foot three inches tall, fell into that opening in the street.

Witnesses said the water went over his head.

"I stay across the street. My sister, everybody stay on this street and if they didn't put anything there in that hole, cars would just come by and go face first," Smith said.

For the past three months, they've dealt with several potholes on her street, most of them filled with water, she said.

They've even tried to put something in the crackling asphalt to make drivers go around.

"We tried to put some tires around so that people driving know how deep the hole was, [but] the tires have sunk in the hole," Smith said.

She added that they've called the city of Jackson to come and check it out, but it still hasn't been fixed.

After Saturday's experience, Smith calls it a serious safety hazard.

"I wish that they would come and do whatever it is that they do, do it before -- just like he fell in, and if his friends weren't out here, he could have drowned, because we didn't know the hole was that deep," Smith said.
