OXFORD, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Ole Miss community is mourning the loss of a student after a hit and run accident over the weekend.

A statement was released from the University of MS Sunday evening about the sudden death of a 20-year-old Carli Sears.

A statement from the university was provided by the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.

Brandi Hephner LaBanc, vice chancellor for student affairs at the University of Mississippi released this statement regarding the student's death.

“The University of Mississippi community mourns the tragic loss of Carli Sears. We are simply heartbroken by this news. Our thoughts are with all of her family and those in the Ole Miss family that shared in her life.”

Jonathan Scott, Interim Director of Public Relations said Sears was killed Sunday morning. Scott also said she was a junior majoring in hospitality management.

Scott also said it appears that Sears died as a result of injuries she received in what authorities describe as a “hit and run” accident. The accident, which reportedly occurred early Sunday morning in West Virginia, remains under investigation.

We're told Sears was a member of the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority at the University of MS and was from Charleston, West Virginia.

Details regarding arrangements and services will be provided by the University of MS as they become available.
